Coast Mountain Gothic

A History of the Coast Mountain Gothic Arch Huts

The Gothic Arch Mountain Hut is a specific style of mountain shelter, several of which were designed and built by the British Columbia Mountaineering Club (BCMC) in the mid-1960s to support mountaineering and other forms of outdoor recreation.

The huts proved so successful that, beginning in 1969, other outdoor clubs began building similar structures based on the BCMC blueprints. Over the past 50 years more than twenty such structures have been built throughout the Coast Mountains and beyond.

These stories explore the compelling history of these modest, yet iconic structures. The challenges encountered and overcome while hut building in harsh remote mountains settings. The growth of mountaineering activities and the outdoor community that these huts helped support over the past fifty years. The gallery provides a wealth of information on specific Gothic Arch Huts and expands on the themes explored within this exhibition.
